Hello, everyone! Today we decided to participate in our first Everybody, Everywear challenge and so we wanted  to give you a quick run of the practical applications of our DIY creations. It is only a sneak peek, more to come down the road... Let us keep it short and sweet for a change. It is still early on in the week so we thought we should take it easy and spare you the prose and go straight to the pics.


So here it goes.

Hoy decidimos participar en nuestro primer desafío de Everybody, Everywear así que queríamos darles un pequeño adelanto a las aplicaciones prácticas de nuestra última publicación de la sección DIY. Es sólo un vistazo, se vendrán más combinaciones en un futuro cercano... Vamos entonces a mantenerlo corto y al grano, para variar. Recién empezamos la semana así que nos apiadamos de ustedes y les ahorramos la prosa y les damos las fotos directamente.

The chambray button down shirt is one of my latest finds (Berni helped me close the deal!). It cost around 30 US$, on one store from a Sta. Fé street boulevard, when most of them retail here at no less than 40 dollars. I hope you can recognize the DIYed watch and maxi skirt. The necklace was also thanks to the shopping assistance services of my dear Berni. It is sold at Onda Shop, an accesories store with really cool prices. It was US$ 6 dollars and it is gorgeous and in keeping with the color shocking trend (BTW, still waiting for the winds of spring to blow our way...). The shoes are peeptoe flats I bought on sale at the end of last summer at around 35 US$.

La camisa de jean es uno de mis últimos hallazgos (¡Berni me ayudó a cerrar el trato!). La compré por 30 US$, en un local de ropa de una galería sobre la avenida Santa Fé, cuando el precio actual de este tipo de prendas está por acá a no menos de 40 US$. No sé si podrán reconocer la pollera maxi y el reloj pulsera, frutos de nuestro DIY. El collar también contó con el asesoramiento de la querida Berni. Es de la tienda  de accesorios Onda Shop, que cuenta con módicos precios. Salió US$ 6 y es una preciosura, y muy acorde a la tendencia de los combos de color (Ya que estamos en el tema, todavía seguimos esperando que los vientos primaverales soplen por estos pagos...). Los zapatos son unas chatitas que compré de oferta en la liquidación de verano del año pasado: sólo 35 US$.










In this case, I am wearing the revamped flats, the chambray button down shirt and the DIY watch. The skirt is courtesy of my aunt, who decided not to wear it right after buying it. And you know me, always up for it! The pearl bracelet was my grandma's. I had to take some pearls out because the color was changed after being stashed for so many years. Finally, the necklace was a birthday gift.

En este caso, armé un conjunto con mis chatitas recauchutadas, mi camisa de jean y el reloj con las cintas intecambiables. La pollera es cortesía de mi tía, que decidió dejar de usarla pero sin nunca estrenarla. Y ustedes me conocen,  ¡no soy de las que desaprovechan estas oportunidades! La pulsera era de mi abuela. Tuve que sacar unas perlas porque habían perdido el color de tanto tiempo que estuvieron archivadas. Finalmente, el collar fue un regalo de cumpleaños.

Taking it literal: 
In the end, we end with a great song to end our post about making ends meet on our neverending on-the-hunt-for-bargains story. So, who else says it better than Linkin' Park and their one-hit wonder (?) "In the end"?

Finalizamos entonces el fin de semana (largo para nosotras) con un sinfín de opciones en nuestra historia sin fin de retazos baratos y arreglos cancheros. En fin, Linkin' Park la tiene más clara y habla mejor de esto de los finales en su canción más conocida, " In the end".

Welcome back, citizens of the blogosphere! I have to tell you the truth. This is a trick up my sleeve. All the elements you are about to see are, actually. This is a summary of my latest eleventh-hour solutions because you can never have too many of those. Either looking for the perfect revamped necklace or for patching things up, it is all taken car of by Momma Pauli.

The first attempt at maxi skirting (word inventing here) was my layered skirt. I saw this gorgeous number on Harry Potter's Emma Watson and got skirtstruck (still inventing words here). Look: 


Mi primer ensayo en lo que a la confección de polleras maxi respecta fue mi pollera con volados. Me inspiré en este hermoso modelo que le vi a la actriz Emma Watson. Miren:








Ok. You may get a tad disappointed because mine turned out completely different. I found scraps of fabric (US$10ish) at Once (a midtown wholesale fabric district where we bought most of our fabric: prices are cheaper and there is more variety) but all plain, no flowers like Watson's skirt. But I did take the opportunity to delve into the whole color blocking movement, since when it started over there we were in the midst of winter. Everyone here is freaking over it now!


Ok. Puede que los decepcione un poquito porque mi versión es completamente diferente. La hice con retazos que compré por 40 y pico de AR pesos en Once, barrio porteño conocido por sus locales con ofertas al por mayor. Como no conseguí con estampados, aproveché la oportunidad para explorar el tan aclamado color blocking, que según recabamos suele traducirse como combos de color. Acá están todas locas por la combinación de colores osados y fuertes. 














On to Berni's maxi skirt now, in the most eye-catching emerald hue, looks as pretty as a picture on her. And how that emboridered shirt matches it all! And the headband, her fetiche, ties it all up.


Pasamos ahora a la maxi pollera de Berni, en un color esmeralda deslumbrante. Le queda pintado. Y encima con esa camisita bordada es el conjunto perfecto. Y la vincha, su fetiche, completa muy bien el conjunto.

This one was a tough cookie but I finally managed to crack it. Remember the band Cake and her infamous cover of "I will survive"? Well, here they delight us with a very catchy "Short skirt, long jacket." Enjoy! And please feel free to enter your own associations, as usual.

Ésta costó un poco, a decir verdad. Pero la descifré. ¿Se acuerdan de la banda Cake, criticada en su momento por hacer un mal cover de la emblemática "I will survive"? Bueno, les muestro acá una pegadiza canción de esa banda:  "Short skirt, long jacket" (Pollera corta, campera larga). A disfrutar y no olviden que pueden mandarnos sus propias asociaciones literales. 

Hi, fellow citizens of the world! I have summoned your presence back into this section to show you one of my latest milestones in the practicality department. As Berni and I have mentioned before, it is a dead-end street bringing some pieces of clothing into Argentina from overseas due to government limiting policies on our import capacity, by which our clothing items may A) rot away in customs for the rest of our days, B) be held hostage until the rightful owner dares pay up an extra unfair amount of big bucks as a sort of toll-fare and on top of taxes...that is if they will even let you have such privilege. 


And let us be honest, some of the clothing outfit array offered to us women here go from the blatant pattern and model repetition to the boring plain pattern-and-fabric variations. Soooooooo, that leaves us with creativity. Case in point:




¡Hola, ciudadanos del mundo! Las he convocado una vez más a esta sección para mostrarles uno de mis logros en lo que a practicidad se refiere. Como Berni y yo les aclaramos antes, es una tarea infructuosa e insalubre entrar productos desde el exterior a la Argentina, dado que el gobierno limita las importaciones y nos deja con dos opciones: A) que las prendas se pudran en la aduana por la eternidad de las eternidades o B) que nuestra preciada adquisición sea tomada como rehén hasta que nosotros, los dueños legítimos, decidamos pagar una suerte de "peaje" además de un abultado impuesto. Y eso es si tenemos suerte.


 Y seamos honestos, la gama de opciones de vestimenta que ofrecen acá a las consumidoras van desde la evidente repetición de modelos y motivos de géneros en telas hasta la aburrida y poco aventurada creación de cortes, terminaciones y estampados. Por ende, nos queda la creatividad. A saber:

This is a beautiful cardigan from one of our top online stores, Mod Cloth (be sure to check it out if you have not just yet. You can even have your own wishlist!). I searched high and low, left no store unturned and could not find something even remotely similar. Therefore, I created this:


 Aquí tenemos un precioso cardigan de una de nuestras tiendas online favoritas, Mod Cloth (no se pierdan la oportunidad de chusmear un poco lo que les ofrece y de armar una lista ideal de prendas o "wishlist"). Busqué por cielo y tierra pero no pude encontrar nada que se le pareciera remotamente. Por lo tanto, yo decidí crear lo siguiente:










And by "I" I meant "we," because my mother was nice enough to do the knitting and I did the embroidery. It is made of wool, both the white cardigan and the colored hearts. I first did the frame of the heart and then I randomly filled in the white inside. 


Cuando dije "yo" quise decir en realidad "nosotras" porque mi mamá se tomó la molestia de tejer el sweater blanco y yo me encargué del bordado de los corazones. Es de lana, tanto el sweater en sí como los corazones.  Primero hice el contorno de los corazones y después los rellené a piachere. 






I made big and small hearts. The woolen thread may look a bit tricky but it is all a put up show. 


Hice corazones grandes y chicos. Por más que la lana parezca querernos jugar una mala pasada es bastante dócil. 








I hope you liked it as much as I enjoyed doing it. Let me tell you, the actual process is kind of fun and mind-distracting. This show stopping situation may not apply to your country, thank God, but you can still make use of our unendingly resourceful-mindedness.

Hello, everyone who is anyone visiting our nook and cranny. This particular section you are about to plunge into is our very own home-made and hand-made craft's corner. Let us warn you that it is not an accomplished designer's exposé, but rather a sneak peek at how we revamp clothes with little cash at hand aided only by our wits (or pure desperation at one point or another). We are learning along the way, mind you, so you will have to bear with our faux pas. Without further ado, here we present our first embellishment project: Cardigans.


Hola a todos los que visitan nuestro querido blog. Esta sección es nuestro rincón de proyectos caseros y hechos a mano. Aquí les mostraremos cómo renovamos nuestra ropa con poca plata y con la ayuda de nuestro ingenio (o simplemente de nuestra desesperación). Tengan en cuenta que vamos aprendiendo al mismo tiempo que trabajamos en nuestros proyectos, así que sepan disculpar cualquier metida de pata. Sin más preámbulos, aquí va la primera renovación, que convertirá esos saquitos viejos y apagados en prendas mucho más alegres y originales.


               


One approach worth delving into is embroidery. I know, it sounds like such a big word but it is quite easy if you just take some time to try it out. To give it a personal tinge, my late grandma used to buy me these needlepoint canvases as a child and I would struggle so hard and end up throwing them out of sight half way through out of anger and frustration: I hated them! But lately I have been noticing its many usages all around the clothing department. Baba, you were so right!


So first things first, get a cardi you want redone. Then, get needlepoint thread and needle (around 2 or 3 dollars around here, with a 4 color floss variation). Now, find the pattern you want to get on your fabric. Copy the pattern using tracing paper. If the sweater is black, the second stage will require the use of white pencil; if it is grey, black pencil, preferrably with a soft lead (Live it, learn it: I used too hard a pencil and the transfer was almost invisible).


La primera propuesta que les ofrecemos consiste en utilizar bordados. Ya sé, cuando uno piensa en bordar, se imagina algo un tanto complejo, pero es más fácil de lo que parece, sólo hay que tomarse el tiempo y hacer el intento. Les cuento una anécdota personal: cuando era chica, mi abuela siempre me compraba plantillas para bordados y yo luchaba y luchaba para después terminar revoleando todo llena de frustración y bronca. ¡Lo odiaba! Pero ahora veo por todas partes que sirve de inspiración para prendas de vestir. ¡Baba, tenías toda la razón!


 Lo primero que hay que hacer es agarrar un saquito que quieran renovar. Después, tienen que conseguir hilo para bordar y agujas (4 colores de hilo y la aguja no cuestan más de 8 pesos argentinos, o entre 2 ó 3 US dólares). Después, buscan el estampado que más les guste para bordar al saquito. Luego calcan el estampado en el saquito. Si la prenda es negra, para este segundo paso van a necesitar usar lápiz blanco; pero si es gris, lo mejor es usar un lápiz negro, preferiblemente uno que tenga punta suave (de la experiencia se aprende: yo usé un lápiz de punta gruesa y el calcado casi ni se notaba).

The idea is to follow the lines on the other side of the tracing paper, and don't get all shy about it, make very thick lines. Once that is finished, you place the piece of tracing paper on the spot of the cardigan where the embroidery will be placed, with the part drawn last facing down. Now, retrace the lines of the drawing heartily. And voilá! You have the transfer ready and now all that is left is to use the embroidery thread to go along the lines and fill in the figures as well. You don't have to be all neat about it, God knows I wasn't...Just try to find a good color pallete, or at least one that suits you best. And keep the stitching loose and not tight like me: it could make nasty unwanted holes in the cardi's fabric. The finishing touch: some red sequins. Check out the final version of the revamped embroidered cardigan:


La idea es seguir las líneas del otro lado del papel de calcar, no se preocupen por el trazado del lápiz y dibujen líneas bien gruesas. Una vez que terminaron con ese paso, apoyan el papel de calcar con el último  lado que delinearon mirando hacia abajo en la parte del saquito donde van a bordar el estampado. Ahora calquen con muchas ganas las líneas del estampado. ¡Y listo! El estampado ya está terminado y lo que queda es bordar las líneas y rellenar el dibujo. No es necesario que sean súper prolijos, yo de hecho no lo fui… traten de conseguir una buena gama de colores que les quede bien en sus saquitos. Y también traten de que el bordado quede suelto y no muy tenso como en el mío, ya que pueden agujerear la tela del saquito. El toque final: algunas lentejuelitas rojas. Miren la versión final del saquito bordado:





My second attempt at improving cardi outlook was by means of lace (short of only one dollar the two meters), making good use of some useless old rags I own. The black sweater's original state was pitiful, to say the least. I carried out two experiments,with button change included. Take a look:


La segunda propuesta consiste en utilizar encaje (los dos metros cuestan menos de un US dólar) para renovar esas prendas viejas que tenemos tiradas por ahí. El estado del saco negro era completamente deplorable. Realicé dos experimentos, que incluyeron cambios de botones. Miren:







To wrap things up, and tracing my footsteps back to the button swap, let me tell you it can work wonders. Another sound example was my overcoat. It was on the cheap, at around US$ 20, but the blackness of the buttons was slowly fading away. I upgraded the look with black golden rimmed buttons. Here is the result:
