Rice, Eggplant and Chickpea Salad

Hi, everyone! Hope you had a great start to the week :) Today I bring you another healthy and tasty recipe. One afternoon a couple of months ago, I was trying to see what I could do with some eggplants that I had in the fridge, so I decided to cook them in the oven and then mix them with some rice, and this is what turned up. This salad is really delicious and it's also quite satisfying, so it can be eaten as a main dish or, of course, it can be served as a side dish.

Rice, Eggplant and Chickpea Salad

Ingredients

- 2 cups yamaní rice
- 3-4 eggplants
- 1 can chickpeas (white beans are good too)
- green olives
- golden raisins
- 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
- thyme
- rosemary
- olive oil
- salt and sugar

Directions

1. Cook the yamaní rice and when it's done, drain it and put it in a salad bowl. Add some olive oil.

2. Meanwhile, cut the eggplants in cubes, put them in an oven tray and sprinkle them with thyme, rosemary and a bit of olive oil. Cook in the oven for about 10 minutes. Remove from the oven, add about 1 tablespoon sugar (you can use more or less than that, or none at all, it all depends on your taste, but the sugar brings out the flavor of the eggplants and it makes them taste even better) and some salt. Cook for another 10 minutes or until the eggplants are done.

3. Add the eggplants to the bowl with the rice. Then add the chickpeas, olives, raisins and red pepper flakes.

Enjoy! This recipe, just like the previous one, doesn't call for any animal products so it's good for vegetarians and vegans alike :)

See you next time!

This was Berni, of B&P.

Ensalada de arroz, berenjenas y garbanzos

Ingredientes

-2 tazas de arroz yamaní
-3-4 berenjenas

¡A disfrutar!

Taking It Literal: This was another difficult one. So, let's see... the recipe calls for chickpeas and so I thought of the Dixie Chicks, haha ;) Here they are, singing the beautiful "Travelin' Soldier".

It's Not Easy Being Green

Everybody, Everywear: Colored Tights

Hi, everyone! Hope you're having a great week :) Today I'm dedicating this post to the Everybody, Everywear challenge! This month's winner is colored tights and even though the weather over here right now doesn't lend itself to warm clothing (we're in the middle of spring and it has finally started getting warm enough to wear bare legs) I thought it'd be fun to participate. Because... who doesn't love colored tights?! ;)

Anyway, I think Kermit The Frog was right: It's not easy being green. You see, I love colored tights and I have a few of different colors: purple, blue, brown, burgundy, black, white, grey and green. And even though I enjoy wearing all of them, I think the green ones are probably the hardest ones to remix. I've worn them twice since I got them and both times I wore them with green flats and a denim skirt... pretty boring, you say? Probably. So for this challenge I decided to try them on with something different:

So I wore them with a white shirt and a flowery skirt from Zara, and with my pair of brown oxfords...

Can you tell the tights are green? I didn't even think about my green-painted closet doors...

But I must say I'm pretty happy about the way this outfit turned out... I probably would have never worn these tights with this skirt had it not been for the challenge. I know, I still have a long way to go in the remixing department. But I'm learning every day! ;) And that's thanks to challenges like this and to all the awesome outfits we get to see in the EBEW website and the different blogs we follow. Thanks so much for the daily inspiration :)

See you next time!

This was Berni, of B&P.

Taking it Literal: Since I made a Kermit the Frog reference in the post, it only makes sense to share the video of him singing his famous song, wouldn't you agree? :) So, take it away, Kermit!

Hallelujah, the Messiah has arrived!... ¡Aleluya, el mesías ya está entre nosotros!

And the miracle ocurred. Life is good. Love is all around... Our ModCloth dresses have landed!

Y se dio el milagro. La vida es buena. El amor nos rodea... ¡Nuestros vestidos de ModCloth tocaron tierra!

Hooray!!!

We know, it is probably too hyperbollic a comment for such mundane business as a plain old dress BUT for us, it is the hugest deal out there. Let us break it down for you. Thing is our government has placed some restrictions on imports (and by some we mean a lot), along the likes of gargantuan overcharges (just a fluke) and retained goods (and by retained we mean never-to-be-seen), all for the sake of preserving local sales and manufacturing, whose costs in the clothing department have skyrocketed so, while leaving no room for creativity in terms of patterns and quality in terms of fabric. One would think that if such economy boosts were applied, some degree of originality plus accessibility would strike a chord in all of the fashion decision- makers, now that they were sans foreign competitors. But no. They just want their pockets lined. Period. Therefore, to us, a dress is a statement, fashion and political-wise.

Given this pretty picture the government officials seem to have brushed all over us (sorry we are getting political but politics is messing with our wardrobe choices and that is unspeakable), we were forced to resort to one of the last charitable souls out there. Said person had to travel to the USA for business and we jumped at the chance of making one of our dreams come true. A huge round of applause for her, whose aid was pivotal to our venture!!!

Applause please

We ordered the items at ModCloth's website, we sent the packages with our purchases to her hotel and a few days later we were owners of our very own first ModCloth dresses. And the hard, tangible proof is below:

Pauli chose a deer dress, technically her Bambi dress; and Berni chose a horse dress. These prints and flowy fabrics are almost impossible to be found in Argentina just short of US$ 50, it would be more like 70 or even 100 dollars over here.

Look! A free gift! That would never happen in Argentina. Such thoughtful online store, who truly knows how to keep customers happy. In our country, service with a smile and for a smile is seldom witnessed, to say the least. Anyway, back to happy-land, we went out to celebrate our accomplishment to Tea Connection and we had a lovely lunch, as we always do when we go to this great deli. Berni had a delicious salad, which had: cherry tomatoes, arugula, avocado, cashew nuts, goat cheese and dried apricots. Yummy! And Pauli had a very tasty sandwich that included: breaded eggplant, arugula, tomatoes and sprouts. We accompanied these meals with a a strawberry, pear and pomegranate flavored water. We love that place! They have really great and healthy food :)

¡Miren!

Now we say farewell with our ModCloth dresses on. We can scratch these off our wishlists... Lucky us!

Rice and Veggies - Arroz y vegetales

Hi, everyone! Hope you're having a wonderful weekend :) Today I wanted to share an easy, healthy, and, above all, delicious meal. I love vegetables and fruits of all kinds, that's what I enjoy eating the most. I'm not a big fan of meat -I don't eat beef and I eat very little pork. I do like chicken and fish-. So, anyway, I'm always trying to find new ways to incorporate a lot of veggies into my meals. A few weeks ago I bought a big bag of soybean sprouts so I decided to cook them with rice and vegetables. And this is what I came up with.

Yamaní & White Rice with Soybean Sprouts and Veggies

Ingredients:

-1 cup white rice
-1 cup yamaní rice
-2 cups soybean sprouts
-1 cup mushrooms
-1/2 cup portobello mushrooms
-2-3 carrots
-2 fennel bulbs
-1 red pepper
-1 tablespoon soy sauce
-1 tablespoon sugar
-Sliced almonds
-Golden raisins

Directions:

1. Cook the white and the yamaní rice. Remember: both these types of rice have different cooking times, white rice is done much faster than yamaní (yamaní usually takes about 25 minutes after water starts boiling) so you should cook them separately. Set aside.

2. Cut the mushrooms and the portobello mushrooms (I make sure not to cut them too small, otherwise they may come apart when cooking them). Cut the carrots, the fennel bulbs and the red pepper in matchstick shape (julienne).

3. Heat 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil in a skillet and then add the carrots, the fennel bulbs and the red pepper. After that, add the soy sauce and the sugar. Cook for about 5 minutes or until the vegetables are a bit soft but still have a bite to them. If the veggies are a bit dry, add some water. Then, add the mushrooms and the portobello mushrooms. Cook a couple of minutes more. Finally, add the soybean sprouts and cook for another minute.

4. In a big salad bowl, add the white and the yamaní rice. Incorporate the veggies and, finally, sprinkle with sliced almonds and golden raisins. I love almonds and raisins so I always add a big handful to the mix.

And that's it! There you have a delicious and healthy meal, which doesn't require any type of meat to make it super yummy :) This recipe doesn't include any type of animal products so it's also good for people who are vegan. Of course, you can use more or less of all the ingredients I listed, and you can also substitute any of the vegetables for the ones you like best. But believe me when I say all those veggies go really well with both types of rice. Hope you try it, and enjoy! See you next time!

This was Berni, of B&P.

Taking it literal: This time around it was a bit hard to think of what to add to this section, so since the recipe calls for two types of rice, soybean sprouts and soy sauce, I thought of the word "chopsticks", because surely this meal could be eaten with a pair of chopsticks, right? Therefore, one of my favorite movies came to mind - "Big" and that wonderful chopsticks sequence at FAO Schwarz with the awesome Tom Hanks and Robert Loggia. I'd dare say this is one of the most famous scenes from the movie, wouldn't you? :)

Making ends meet on your DIY... Cabos que se atan, cuentas que cierran

DIY | Everybody, Everywear

Hello, everyone! Today we decided to participate in our first Everybody, Everywear challenge and so we wanted  to give you a quick run of the practical applications of our DIY creations. It is only a sneak peek, more to come down the road... Let us keep it short and sweet for a change. It is still early on in the week so we thought we should take it easy and spare you the prose and go straight to the pics.

So here it goes.

The chambray button down shirt is one of my latest finds (Berni helped me close the deal!). It cost around 30 US$, on one store from a Sta. Fé street boulevard, when most of them retail here at no less than 40 dollars. I hope you can recognize the DIYed watch and maxi skirt. The necklace was also thanks to the shopping assistance services of my dear Berni. It is sold at Onda Shop, an accesories store with really cool prices. It was US$ 6 dollars and it is gorgeous and in keeping with the color shocking trend (BTW, still waiting for the winds of spring to blow our way...). The shoes are peeptoe flats I bought on sale at the end of last summer at around 35 US$.

In this case, I am wearing the revamped flats, the chambray button down shirt and the DIY watch. The skirt is courtesy of my aunt, who decided not to wear it right after buying it. And you know me, always up for it! The pearl bracelet was my grandma's. I had to take some pearls out because the color was changed after being stashed for so many years. Finally, the necklace was a birthday gift.

Have a good week!

This was Pauli, of B&P.

Taking it literal:
In the end, we end with a great song to end our post about making ends meet on our neverending on-the-hunt-for-bargains story. So, who else says it better than Linkin' Park and their one-hit wonder (?) "In the end"?

Literalmente:

All and sundry...Artículos de ramos generales

Welcome back, citizens of the blogosphere! I have to tell you the truth. This is a trick up my sleeve. All the elements you are about to see are, actually. This is a summary of my latest eleventh-hour solutions because you can never have too many of those. Either looking for the perfect revamped necklace or for patching things up, it is all taken car of by Momma Pauli.

¡Bienvenidos nuevamente, ciudadanos de la blogosfera! Debo sincerarme.

Off we go. As third runner up, we have an owl necklace (enlarging my collection, I know). It was originally a key chain I found in Todo Moda, but I turned it into a necklace. It was too cute and colorful too pass up!!! (Let me remind you we are about to break into Spring time here so color is all I can daydream about.)

Second runner up, the hand-me-down flats. My sister got sick of them and threw them my way. (I usually pick up her clothing litter and I have to say I love the scavenger adventure. There are usually some items with great potential.) They are maroon/bordeaux. But I didn't like the fake cinch on it. SO I added 2 flowers that I came across at Todo Moda, again (monument to said store coming up soon). I had been looking for many weeks for the right flower and the right clasp, something that wouldn't take over the shoe or that wouldn't drop from my foot while running for my morning bus. So there you have them. The pearl in the middle complements the color very well.

He aquí el resultado final.

First runner up, the watch consternation. Turns out, about a week ago, the strap of my cheapy cheap watch broke and at the same time, the battery of my back up watch died. Great timing, right? Go figure! Inspired by this beautiful tie-up bracelet from Anthropologie (the store that has brought you the outfits from Gilmore GirlsGlee is currently following suit),

Tie-Around Bracelet

I decided to take one of my black satin ribbon and rig up this baby.

You can use any color-ribbon...

Podés usar cualquier color de cinta...

...I put my sewing rubble to the job (do the colors ring a bell, maxi-skirt wise?)...

...and you can even combine colors!!!

...¡y hasta pueden combinar colores!

One last for the cheap seats in the back, you Carry Bradshaws. I got a new bag from Fallabella (a chain store that has everything from apparel to ornaments). The prices there tend to make my purse starve out its money, too dear, yet this time it cost me only 40 US$. It is a classic model, yet tasteful and spaceful... and I am grateful (had to finish the rhyming pattern there). But I wanted to do it up a bit so I thought of tassels. I went to my local notions store (second monument coming right up) and I got each at 45 cents of a dollar, tallying up the score at 5 US dollars for 7 tassels, completely interchangeable. How is that for a good bargain?

Buena oferta, ¿no?

Taking it literal: "All" can be a very wide word but it has never had a better dictionary entry than the one created by none other than The Beatles. All rise! The Kings are passing...

Hi, everyone! Today I want to share with all of you this delicious recipe for a honey & spices cake. If you like spices, then this cake is for you :) I took the recipe from a book called Delicias Al Horno (Baked Goods). Here is what you need to make this delicious treat.

Ingredients:

2/3 cup butter, plus additional for greasing pan
½ cup dark brown sugar
½ cup honey
1 tablespoon water
1/6 cups self-rising flour
½ teaspoon ground ginger
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon caraway seeds*
crushed seeds from 8 cardamom pods
2  eggs, beaten
2/7 cups powdered/icing sugar

*Honestly, I have no idea what caraway seeds are, so I always substitute them for 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg and it tastes really good.

Ingredientes:

Instructions:

1. Preheat oven to 350ºF. Grease an 8x1/4-inch pan. Combine butter, dark brown sugar, honey and water in small saucepan. Cook at low heat until butter has melted and sugar has dissolved. Remove from heat and let cool for 10 minutes.

2. Sift flour and mix with ginger, cinnamon and caraway and cardamom seeds. Make a hole in the middle. Add honey mix and eggs and mix until well blended. Pour over greased pan and bake for 40-50 minutes, until the cake rises and wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool on top of cooling rack.

3. Sift powdered sugar and add enough warm water to make a soft and a bit liquid icing. Pour icing over cake with a spoon.

If you want to make this dessert even more decadent, add a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Sooo good ;)

Enjoy!

Preparación:

¡Muuuy rico! ;)

¡Que lo disfruten!

Taking it literal: This time we have none other than ABBA with their very catchy "Honey Honey". Please, don't miss this video; those outfits (especially the girls') and the choreography... priceless! ;)
